...and you will be joining a group whose members share a commitment to building the kind of socialism that will encourage minorities to express and develop their historical and cultural identities, and liberate people of all communities from poverty, racism, sexism, oppression and war.
We are socialists, diasporists and secularists
As socialists we know that there can be no secure future for Jews, other minorities, working people and the unemployed under a system promoting private greed instead of meeting need. We campaign for social and economic justice locally, nationally and internationally. We are anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist. We work for a socialist solution to the Israel/Palestine conflict based on equality and self-determination for Israeli and Palestinian Jews and Arabs. As socialists we campaign actively against conservative forces in our own community.
As diasporists we reject the negative ideology of Zionism, which undermines diaspora communities by insisting on the centrality of Israel to Jewish life. As diasporists we oppose the way Zionism subordinates the political, economic and cultural needs of Jewish communities to the demands of the Israeli state. As diasporists we do not believe that Jews outside Israel are ‘in exile’. We support the right of Jewish communities to exist and flourish in security and harmony with other communities in the countries where they live.
As secularists we recognise that people express Jewish identity in different ways. We support pluralism in Jewish life and within that framework we work especially to strengthen progressive, secular Jewish identities. We challenge our communal ‘leaders’ whenever they attempt to confine Jewish identity solely within a religious or Zionist straitjacket. As secularists we challenge them too when they try to exclude Jews from full participation in Jewish life on the basis of their politics, gender or sexuality.
The JSG is an open and democratic organisation that works and campaigns wherever possible with other groups sharing some or all of our aims. The JSG forms its policies and elects officers at an annual policy conference open to all members on an equal basis. We welcome all individuals who agree to work for the political principles above and to support the policies democratically decided at our annual conference.
All members receive a regular internal discussion bulletin, a frequent newsletter detailing meetings and events and can participate fully in our annual conference and in any aspect of our work.
Every thinking individual wants to change the world but you are not going to do it on your own. As part of a group you can make yourself heard and you can help to bring about change for the better – in the Jewish community, in the left and in the anti-racist and anti-fascist movement.
