The Plagues of today

The Jewish Socialists’ Group, like other secular Jewish organisations, take some of the main Judaic ceremonies and make them our own. We did this In March this year, when we held an online Passover event.For us Passover (or Pesach) is both a festival of liberation of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt and a chance to come together to continue our fight for a better world and against injustice wherever it exists. 

The traditional Passover Seder includes a recitation of the Ten Plagues that the Bible says God brought on the Egyptians to persuade Pharaoh to free the Israelites from slavery. In our Seder we showed a film that looked at the plagues that still exist today, which have been exacerbated by the pandemic – the plagues of the occupation in Israel/Palestine; of climate change; of worldwide hunger and poverty; of violence against women and girls. 

We made this film Plagues Today for our Seder but we think it is still relevant and hope you will think so too
