A time for reflection and change
Yom Kippur begins on the evening of 24 of September 2023 (5784 in the Jewish calendar).
As Jewish Socialists we mark it by putting up this video with the music of Leonard Cohen's haunting song Who by Fire, which is based on the Yom Kippur observance about who will be inscribed in the "book of life" for another year and who will not. Each year we change some of the content to reflect the resistance of groups of people against injustice.
Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement. We can all reflect on things we could do better in the coming year. But, when we face climate breakdown, food poverty, the rise of authoritarian rule with attempts to take away people's rights, we know who should really be atoning for their sins.
If you are fasting we wish you well over the fast.
