Football Matters

As Euro 2020 so forcefully reminded us - "the beautiful game" is awash with racism. But it isn't just the ugly outpourings of Tory MPs, newspapers and individuals.

Cancel the "Friendly"

Said Odeh was a 16-year old footballer who was shot and killed by Israeli soldiers in May. Said's club, Balata FC (Markaz Shabab Balata) is based in the Nablus refugee camp and plays in the West Bank Premier League.  On 8th August Inter Milan and Athletico Madrid are due to play a pre-season friendly in Israel. After Said's killing, Balata FC and 200 other Palestinian teams are urging Athletio and Milan to cancel the match. You can join them: https://bit.ly/3Bf4SZ9

Boycott Puma

The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Movement have been highlighting sportswear brand Puma's involvement with illegal settlements on the West Bank for many years. Puma is the main sponsor of the Israel Football Association (IFA), which includes teams in Israel’s illegal settlements on occupied Palestinian land.  If you want, you can go to their website and download their "Code of Ethics". Alternatively you may want to notify all the sports shops that stock their products, including JD Sports and Selfridges, that this particular supplier colludes in breaking international law. Click here for more information.

And finally a photo. This is Clapton Community FC in East London who have joined the campaign against PUMA. They have fabulous shirts as well as fabulous politics.
